Physiotherapy emphasizes the preservation, enhancement, or restoration of movement and physical function impaired or threatened by disease, injury, or disability. Therapeutic exercise, physical modalities (such as massage and electrotherapy), assistive devices, and patient education promote an expedited return to health.

At Continuum Health Centre, we know how frustrating it can be to find a facility that understands a client's sport or passion and the rehabilitation required to return to fitness. At Continuum, our physiotherapy services are designed by active individuals for active individuals. Our rehab professionals are motivated to help clients get back to doing what they love to do, more resilient than ever. Our main role is to provide optimal healthcare services and to coach or guide each client in their recovery process. The practitioners at Continuum will make sense of the barriers each client faces and develop an individualized, goal-oriented plan to expedite a full return to health.

An initial client assessment starts by documenting a historical synopsis of the ailment. Specific physical tests and measures accompany the evaluation, emphasizing flexibility and range of motion. These findings help establish a diagnosis, and the client's journey to recovery begins. As a key part of Continuum's integrated support team, the physiotherapist develops a treatment plan based on the client's current abilities and functional needs. Our physiotherapists develop treatment plans in a cooperative and collaborative learning environment, involving their fellow practitioners as required. The individualized strategy incorporates modalities and approaches that best suit the client's goals, emphasizing a return to total health. Supported by the best know-how, techniques, and equipment available, clients can realize full movement without pain or inhibition.

Physiotherapy treatments include the following:
At Continuum, personalized exercise programs are designed to improve your strength, range of motion, and function. Initial and ongoing care leverages massage, joint mobilization, and manipulation to reduce pain and stiffness. As well, functional activity and tolerance testing/training complement ongoing client care. Additional services include return-to-fitness planning and application of assistive, adaptive, supportive, and protective devices and equipment to provide continuity of care. Our physiotherapists recognize that an emphasis on promoting changes in an individual’s environment positively facilitates removing barriers to function. Our practitioners pride themselves on being healthcare providers as well as coaches and guides in your recovery process.

At Continuum Health Centre, chiropractic care is a hands-on, non-invasive, and drug-free practice that safely and effectively helps relieve pain and improve the body’s overall function, using various treatments depending on an individual's needs. From manual ‘hands-on’ adjustment techniques to soft tissue therapy, chiropractors at Continuum focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of joint, muscle, and bone pain, with a primary focus on the spine and back.

After conducting an initial assessment to ascertain functional ranges of movement and levels of discomfort/pain, the chiropractors at Continuum implement a therapeutic approach based primarily upon the interactions of the spine and nervous system. As such, the primary treatment method requires segmented adjustments of the spinal column. Common disorders, such as back and neck pain that stem from the musculoskeletal system, can be corrected through manual adjustment or manipulation of the spinal vertebrae. This therapy assists in correcting nervous system dysfunction.

The chiropractors at Continuum enable our clients to live the active, pain-free lives they deserve. Our practitioners alleviate the discomfort that creeps into everyday life by treating neck pain, back pain, arthritis, certain types of headaches, injuries, and more. These specialists are the spine, muscle, and nervous system experts. Each Continuum chiropractor specializes in assessing, diagnosing, treating, and developing care plans to keep our clients moving and pain-free and shares their insights with our integrated support team members.

At Continuum, our counselors work with clients to set short and long-term goals, develop systems to address emotional concerns, and establish mechanisms for coping and effective communication. Our goal is for clients to improve self-concept, promote and realize behavioral changes, and strive for improved mental health.

At Continuum Health Centre, massage therapy is a primary treatment involving hands-on manipulation of soft tissues. Our massage therapists center on our clients' muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints to provide relief.

Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body. It optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous, and circulatory systems. As a result, the physical function can be developed, maintained, and improved. In addition, physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through massage therapy.

Before your first treatment, your Massage Therapist will propose a personalized treatment plan based on an initial assessment and health history. The initial evaluation leverages the results of various tests to determine muscles and joints' condition and inform the integrated support team of the subsequent courses of action.

Greg has a keen interest in human behaviour. He’s worked with a very diverse population with varying activity levels, and among everyone, there remains a common theme. We’re all human. As such, there are similarities in the shortcuts our bodies and brains will take to make life easier in response to injuries, stresses, and emotions. However, these shortcuts are not always great long-term solutions.

Greg is a firm believer that the body is not simply a sum of its parts, and the interactions of this complex system are of the utmost importance. Understanding these patterns plays an integral role in treating his clients while incorporating movement, exercise, education, and manual therapy. Greg’s passion is getting an individual back to full capacity – as it relates to the activities that are important and meaningful to them.

Greg’s other specific interest is in performance physio to mitigate injury and maximize performance. He has worked with national and Olympic level athletes in almost every sport, including snowboarding, skiing, beach volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, track, triathlon, weight lifting, swimming, diving, tennis, soccer, and mountain biking. She focuses her practice on partnering with clients who are seeking relief from soft tissue orthopedic conditions affecting their active lifestyle. As an athlete herself, Rachel is motivated to support her clients in their recreational and competitive pursuits using her technical skills and experience. Trevor graduated from the University of Western States with his Doctorate of Chiropractic and a Masters of Science in Sports Medicine. He grew up in Surrey, BC, but after completing his Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology at UVIC he always knew he would settle on the island. Trevor grew up playing a number of sports and believes in the importance of overall athleticism as well as developing a positive experience with health and exercise. Throughout his years playing competitive rugby with the Bayside Sharks on the mainland, he had the help of many great health professionals to rehab his injuries but it was chiropractic that had the greatest pull.

Not only does he specialize in treating musculoskeletal conditions of the spine, Trevor also has great interest and skill in treating injuries and conditions involving the shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and other extremities. Trevor has his DNS Strength Training 1 certification and is always pursuing continuing education to better help his patients. In practice, he utilizes a variety of treatments, including: • Adjustments and mobilizations • Soft tissue therapy • Instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation (IASTM) • Cupping • Functional movement assessment and exercise correction • Shockwave therapy

Trevor’s main goal with treatment is to work with his patients towards a common goal, whether that means returning to sport after an injury, treating those nagging aches and pains, being able to work more functionally and with less pain, or simply to learn how to move better and live a more active lifestyle. As a lifelong athlete with a history in strength and conditioning, he believes in the power of exercise as a rehab tool and that the ultimate goal of treatment is to give each patient the tools and knowledge they need to stay healthy.

Dr Jaritt Ptolemy has been in clinical practice for over 15 years as a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) for over 17 years. Prior to that, he received an Honours Kinesiology degree from McMaster University. Dr. Jaritt has also received a certification as a Medical Acupuncture provider from McMaster University in 2009. Other note-worth certifications are Neurodynamic Solutions (NDS); Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) through the Prague School of Rehabilitation; Specific Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA); Active Release Technique (ART); Advanced Instructor through the Oxygen Advantage; Blood Flow Restriction (BFR).

Dr. Jaritt’s approach is to optimize the recovery of each patient. This starts with a thorough assessment in order to achieve an accurate diagnosis, followed by a treatment plan based on patient needs. Dr. Jaritt’s extensive skillset allows for the most appropriate intervention for each patient. He believes patient education is imperative and treatment should be a collaborative effort between patient and practitioner in order to maximize recovery. The most effective treatment plans are when both practitioner and patient work with the bodies needs, which often includes patient homework and behavioral modifications, in addition to treatment.

Dr. Jaritt strongly believes that the body wants to find equilibrium in a healthy and pain-free state. Treatment and rehabilitation is often over-complicated and recovery lengthened because basic core tenants of human movement are overlooked. In Dr. Jaritt’s experience, most people have dysfunctional breathing patterns, and just by restoring basic breathing patterns patients often experience significant improvement in symptoms and recovery. For example, functional breathing is imperative for functional movement and signals to the nervous system whether the body is receptive to recovery. Dr. Jaritt is always looking for the low-hanging fruits that will have the greatest impact on patient recovery.

Dr. Jaritt has always blurred the lines between treatment, rehabilitation exercise and training. Some patients may require a more passive approach to treatment - such as soft tissue treatment of muscles and fascia, joint mobilization and or spinal manipulation. Other patients may require a more active approach concentrating more on restoring functional movement quality and range of motion progressing to functional capacity training with loads. Dr. Jaritt primarily works with an active general population, and has also worked as a therapist to two national level teams.
